Full Description

A group of buildings and stuctures situated on the west side of Mill Lane, Hurn, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The complex is probably part of a World War II military base (see MDO39677) or annexe to wartime Hurn airfield (MDO39623).

The military buildings comprise narrow rectangular buildings, some with curved roofs, possibly Nissan huts or similar, regularly arranged either side of an access road. There appears to be some curved structures with turfed rooves and single doorway openings. These may be bomb or blast shelters - similar structures are also visible within the wartime Hurn airfield and the larger military base (MDO39677) to the east.

By 1954 the site was demolished and under scrub and tree cover (2).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

The site is under tree cover in 2017 and not visible on current Google Earth imagery.
