Full Description

Group of barrows in Quomp Copse - see plan: SZ 1312796291: No 1. A low spread mound 10m diameter surrounded by berm, bank, and ditch. Small depression, 1m across and 0.3m deep may indicate previous excavations but more likely removal of tree roots. <1>

A Bronze Age barrow, one of a row of five barrows along a ridgeway in Quomp Copse, is visible on an RAF 1954 aerial photograph and on current Lidar imagery. <2 and 3>

The barrow may be the feature already recorded in the Dorset HER under MWX3257 but to avoid confusion, the barrow recorded here was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP. The barrow group is recorded under NHRE Hob UID 458505, with this barrow thought to be number 1.

On current Lidar imagery <3> this feature is shown as a low mound measuring around12.5m in diameter, with a shallow 10m by 5m depression along its north side, possibly the result of tree removal or excavation. It has a banked semi-circular enclosure, slightly open to the east, similar to the southernmost barrow in the group (MDO8810), possibly the result of post medieval woodland management.

The barrow is visible under early plantation on an RAF aerial photograph dated 1954 <2>. It is under tree cover on current Google Earth imagery <4>.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
