Monument record MDO39663 - Post medieval trackways and possible late prehistoric earthworks, Quomp Copse, Hurn

Please read our .

Summary

A series of ditched and banked trackways and earthworks enclosing a low spur of ground within Quomp Copse are visible on current Lidar imagery. The features are likely to be post medieval trackways shown on the OS 1st Edition map, and partially visible on an RAF 1954 aerial photograph. It is just possible they incorporate or re-use earlier earthworks of possible late prehistoric origin. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

A series of ditched and banked earthworks and trackways enclosing a low spur of ground within Quomp Copse are visible on current Lidar imagery (1).

The features comprise two linear ditches flanked by a sections of bank on their south side. These encircle the southeast side of the slope and the base of slope on its southwest end. A further rectilinear bank is also visible across the headland of the spur, effectively enclosing it on its west side. A record of a disturbed mound (MWX1042) at the southeast end of this rectilinear bank may be associated with these earthworks, although see also record MDO… which also indicates a possible Bronze Age barrow near this location.

The features are likely to be post medieval trackways shown on the OS 1st Edition map (2), and partially visible on an RAF 1954 aerial photograph (3). It is just possible, however, that they incorporate or re-use earlier earthworks of possible late prehistoric origin; further earthworks to the west (MDO8811) may be of contemporary date and part of a wider late prehistoric or later monument.

The earthworks are under tree cover on current Google Earth imagery (4).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
