Full Description
A banked earthwork or structure visible to the northwest of Hurn Court on current Lidar imagery is thought to be the remains of a post medieval ice house shown on the OS 1st Edition map (1).
The feature comprises a 21.5m by 17m sub-oval banked earthwork topped by a smaller, slightly irregular, mound or structure measuring 12m by 9.8m. The exact form of the mound or structure is not clear on Lidar imagery (1). The OS 1st Edition map shows the ice house positioned against the north side of a historic tree-lined field boundary and within a small copse of trees (2). The copse is visible on aerial photographs from the 1940s forwards and is still present on current Google Earth imagery (3). The ice house is not visible as it is under tree cover.
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
