Monument record MDO39640 - Probable post medieval drainage, possible former medieval strip field, Hurn Court, Hurn, Christchurch

A series of parallel ditched linear features are visible in fields to the west of Hurn Court, Hurn, on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery. The features may be associated with post medieval drainage, possibly respecting a former medieval strip field system. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

A series of probable parallel ditched post medieval drainage channels are visible in fields to the west of Hurn Court, Hurn, on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).

The ditched features are located in a field on the north bank of the River Stour. The alignment and spacing of these broadly corresponds with that of an area of probable fossilised medieval strip field to the west (MDO39639). The OS 1st Edition map also shows some trees marking the line of some of the ditched features in this field (3), possibly indicating that this field also originated from an area of former medieval strip field. The ditched linears may then reflect post medieval alteration respecting that former medieval field division, but this is not certain.

The ditched features are still currently visible on Google Earth Imagery (3) and were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
