Full Description

A series of possible medieval strip field boundaries fossilised by subsequent post medieval extraction are visible in fields to the southwest of Hurn Court Farm, Hurn, on current Lidar imagery (1). The linear scarps form narrow northeast to southwest aligned parallel bands extending towards the north bank of the River Stour. The features are on the same alignment as other historic field boundaries on both sides of the River Stour at this location, which may be associated with areas of former medieval strips with a larger area of medieval open field. These may have formed the basis for allocating subsequent area of gravel extraction along the river terraces of the River Stour during the post medieval period.

The features are visible as narrow ditched linears on 2012 Google Earth imagery (2).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
