Monument record MDO39619 - Post medieval or early 20th century enclosure, Parley Green, Hurn, Christchurch

A banked enclosure on the west side of Chapel Lane, Parley Green, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The enclosure may be post medieval or early 20th century in origin and possibly agricultural in function. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

A banked enclosure located within a field on the east side of Chapel Lane, Parley Green, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The enclosure measures around 12m long by 11.5m wide with a possible entrance on its east side. By 1945 the raised banks appear to be slightly eroded on their west and east sides and covered in grass or low growing vegetation (1). The base of the enclosure appears to be ditched or hollowed. The enclosure is thought likely to be post medieval or early 20th century in origin and possibly agricultural in function.

The enclosure is no longer extant by 1959, visible on an aerial photograph of that year as a very shallow depression within the field (3).

The site lay under or close to the edge of the extended perimeter of Bournemouth Hurn airfield by 1988 (4).

The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.
