Full Description

A banked enclosure on the west side of Chapel Lane, Parley Green, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The enclosure measures around 12m long by 13m wide with an entrance on its north side. The raised banks appear to be slightly eroded by 1945 and covered in grass or low growing vegetation (1). The enclosure is thought likely to be post medieval or early 20th century in origin and possibly agricultural in function.

The enclosure is no longer extant by 1959, visible on an aerial photograph of that year as a square patch of vegetation, no banks visible (3).

The site was incorporated into Bournemouth Hurn airfield by 1988 and now underlies the extended runway (4).

The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.
