Full Description
Two small historic or modern enclosures on Barnfield Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs(1).
The southeastern enclosure measures 5.75m by 6.3m and is crescent-shaped with a possible entrance on its west side. The northwestern enclosure measures 5m by 6m and is also loosely cresent-shaped, with a wide opening on its west side.
The enclosures may be modern and associated with wider wartime military activity on the heathland north of Christchurch. Alternatively they may be medieval or post medieval agricultural enclosures, possibly bee gardens.
The enclosures were sited on open heathland in 1949, at which time they appeared as indistinct and overgrown banks (1). They are no longer visible on current Google Earth imagery and their current condition is unknown.
The enclosures were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
