Monument record MDO39419 - Modern gravel pit, Knapp Mill Avenue, Christchurch

An area of open gravel extraction on the east side of Fairmile Road is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. This was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

An area of open gravel extraction 144.2m by 154m on the east side of Fairmile Road is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). Extraction relatively small-scale by 1946 and partial earthworks of barrow (MDO8675) still visible at this time (1). Extractive area appears to continue being worked through 1940s and 1950s; A 1960 aerial photograph shows the extractive pit in disuse (3). The area is under housing on 200 Google Earth imagery (4).
