Summary

The field name The Racky on a 1747 estate map, later called Rackey Close on the Tithe Map (1842) suggests there may have been cloth drying racks in this field. The adjacent field is called Yarn Barton on the Tithe Map, and this too suggests clothmaking.

‘The names Yarn Barton (1842/3) and Rackey Close (1842/3), earlier The Racky (1747), both suggest clothmaking activities, the latter name presumably referring to tentering racks.’
