Summary

Oringinally a row of three almshouses, of which, the earliest mention in the Church wardens Account is 1736. By 1842 the building had became very dilapidated, and was restored. In 1937, the then disused almshouses had become ruinous. The building was again restored in 1939. It is now called 'Church Cottage', and is used as a residence for widows of clergy to the Church of England.

Full Description

Oringinally a row of three almshouses, of which, the earliest mention in the Church wardens Account is 1736. By the year 1842 the building had became very dilapidated, and was restored. In 1937, the then disused almshouses had become ruinous. The building was again restored in 1939. It is now called 'Church Cottage', and is used as a residence for widows of clergy to the Church of England. <2>

Church Cottage. The former almshouse is now an attractive domestic structure. A plaque set in the south west gable-end records the restoration of 1939; it gained the Civic Trust Award in 1962. <3>
