‘MILTON ROAD, MILBORNE ST ANDREW. The archaeological assessment of land at Milton Road, Milborne St Andrew (SY 802 980) comprised the mechanical excavation of c. 300 metres of trenches across a single field plot. Inspection of the exposed subsoil revealed a number of features and deposits. Most were naturally-occurring periglacial features; three may be of an archaeological nature, but manual excavation failed to recover datable artefacts. Two possible negative lynchets were noted on the hillside. A number of pieces of prehistoric worked flint was recovered from spoil heaps. Towards the lower-lying east side of the field the underlying chalk was buried by a hillwash desposit of up to 700 mm in depth, under which a series of gravel and silt deposits were noted which are considered to be of alluvial origin. A worked flint flake and much burnt flint was contained within the upper alluvial deposits and is similar to burnt mound deposits identified in valley floors elsewhere in the county.’
