Full Description

Brick kiln and clay pit, described as 'Old Clay Pits', marked on the 1st epoch Ordnance Survey map [1].

The clay pit is visible as an earthwork, and a possible brick kiln as a small structure, on 1940s aerial photographs [2]. The clay pit is documented on the OS 1st Edition map as an old clay pit with a brick kiln and on the OS 2nd Edition map as a brickworks -a kiln is shown in a different location by this time and is possibly the same structure in 1948 [1, 3]. No structures are shown on the OS 3rd Edition map and the site is not named at this time [4]. The extent of the clay pit by 1948 appears slightly increased from that shown on the historic mapping. An additional circular extractive pit is also visible on the west side of the brickworks, and a further discrete pits to the northeast, in Sturminster Marshall parish, all also present on the OS 1-3 Edition historic mapping. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
