Full Description
Historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the southwest of Higher Brimley Coombe Farm, Stoke Abbott, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). These appear to subdivide enclosures shown on the OS 1st Edition map (2), which are of probable medieval origin, since fossilised by post medieval boundaries. This suggests the earthworks are also probably post medieval in origin but an earlier date is possible. There has been substantial boundary removal in this area since the late 19th century. The lost boundaries show up particularly well on an aerial photograph taken in 1971 (3) and some are still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (4). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
