Full Description
A large extractive pit measuring around 320m by 180m on Burstock Down, Burstock, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and (2). It is shown as 'old sand pit' on the OS 1st Edition map (3). A trackway also shown on the OS 1st Edition map accesses the quarry via Lewesdon Hill Lane to the north, skirting the southwest corner of Lewesdon Hillfort. The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (4), although now under greater tree cover. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
