Summary

Two units of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947 in the vicinity of Horse Mill Cross. The units are ruler straight and may be the result of 19th century steam ploughing although a 20th century origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP, they are still visible as extant earthworks on recent Google Earth imagery.

Full Description

Two units of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947 in the vicinity of Horse Mill Cross (1). The spacing between the ridges is 4m so too wide for modern ploughing but much narrower than medieval ridge and furrow. The units are ruler straight and may be the result of 19th century steam ploughing although a 20th century origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP, they are still visible as extant earthworks on recent Google Earth imagery. (2-3).
