Full Description

A possible post medieval extractive pit to the south of Spring House, Broadwindsor, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and 1970s (2). The possible quarry sits within a small irregular enclosure, which is shown on the OS First Edition map (3) along with a trackway bordered by historic field boundaries. The enclosure is shown as open at the southeast corner on the OS 1st Edition map (3) and on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1). The trackway was still extant in 1947 (1) but shows as partially disused by 1971 (2). The earthworks visible within the enclosure on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1) may represent post medieval quarrying as they are located within a broader line of extractive pits following a band of calcareous geology but it is also possible that they relate to a former structure, such as a post medieval farmstead, for example. The site is still visible on the Google Earth imagery (4). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
