Full Description

Fragments of a field system of medieval or post medieval date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947 to the east of Higher Sminhay Farm (1). The features include three units of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow with associated field boundaries. The spacing between the ridges is 4m so too wide for modern ploughing but much narrower than medieval ridge and furrow. The features are very straight and may be the result of post medieval steam plough cultivation although later 20th century ploughing is possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP. The site has been plough-levelled and the ridging is no longer visible on recent Google Earth imagery (2).
