Please read our .

Summary

A large curvilinear embankment to the northeast of Hursey House, Broadwindsor,is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s, 1970s and on the latest Lidar imagery. The earthwork could potentially be a substantial boundary pre-dating the boundaries shown on the OS 1st Edition map and therefore potentially medieval or earlier in origin. It may, however, be natural in origin. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description

A large curvilinear embankment to the northeast of Hursey House, Broadwindsor,is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1), 1970s (2) and on the latest Lidar imagery (3). The earthwork could potentially be a substantial boundary pre-dating the boundaries shown on the OS 1st Edition map (4) and therefore potentially medieval or earlier in origin. The bank appears to form a large oval enclosure above a stream valley, with a possible short section of internal bank and an additional curving bank at the northeastern end.

The bank could, however, be natural in origin as the local geology does exhibit many banks and scarps that appear to be semi man-made or augmented natural features. The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (5)and was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
