Full Description

A series of extensive post medieval extractive pits to the west of Hursey, Burstock, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and on the latest Lidar imagery (2). The size of the extractive pits varies, with the longest around 310m in length, the smallest around 123m. The extractive pits extend over several enclosures of probable medieval origin but which have seen some post medieval re-organisation and the extractive pits appear to broadly respect this later pattern. The remains of a lime kiln (MDO38740) is visible at ST 4307 1027 on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1) and the extractive pits are probably associated with this. The OS 1st Edition map (3) shows the lime kiln and also marks some of the extractive pits as 'quarry', some as 'old quarry', with some not shown. Some areas of quarrying are showing as less fresh on the latest Lidar imagery (2) and these may already have gone out of use by the late 19th century, indicating phased workings. The site is clearly visible on an aerial photograph taken in 1971 (4) and on the latest Google Earth imagery (5). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
