Full Description

Historic field boundaries to the east and south of Burstock Grange (NMR ST 40 SW 8; Hob UID 193080), Burstock, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). The boundaries are broadly rectilinear in form and appear to sub divide larger enclosures of probable medieval origin. A broad banked field boundary to the east of Burstock Grange is not shown on the OS 1st Edition map but appears to be in use by 1947 (1). Smaller scarps or lynchets closer to the Grange are also visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947 (1) and 1971 (2). The boundaries appear to represent phases of enclosure during the medieval and post medieval periods. The site is visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3) and was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
