Full Description
A series of historic banked and ditched field boundaries and trackways to the south of Lower Sandpit Farm are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). The form and alignment of these linear features potentially indicates boundaries of both medieval and post medieval origin, with some evidence of multi-phased enclosure. The boundaries are located within former medieval strip fields and some of the longer aligned boundaries may relate to former strip boundaries within these. A rectilinear banked and ditched enclosure in the centre of the group appears to relate to a phase of sub-division of the medieval strip fields prior to the one showing on the OS 1st Edition map (2), suggesting a late medieval or early post medieval origin. Some of the boundaries are visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3), although only faintly. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
