Full Description

Two parallel ditches to the west of Manor Farm,Burstock, may be historic trackways or possible former leats visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and on the latest Lidar imagery (2). They are located along the contour line of a west facing slope above a stream valley within enclosures probably associated with Burstock Manor and are potentially of medieval or post medieval origin. The long curving ditches have the appearance of possible leats or catch meadow channels but the OS 1st Edition historic map (3) also suggests possible trackways following similar lines, although these are indistinct. A vertical aerial photograph taken in 1971 (4) suggests trackways but these do not wholly correspond to modern gateways and further appear to extend under field boundaries shown on the OS 1st Edition historic mapping. A modern trackway cuts across them from southwest to northeast. They are still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (5). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
