Full Description

The narrow linear ditches of possible historic field boundaries or post medieval or later drainage ditches to the southwest of Whetham Farm are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s (1). The narrow ditched features are straight in form and run broadly parallel to each other. They also lie within a field pattern of broadly medieval origin but with evidence of post medieval modification. If boundaries of medieval date they may be relict strip field boundaries, but this is not certain and a later date is possible. As they run across the contours towards a stream valley they may alternatively be post medieval or later drainage ditches. The ditched features are still partially visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
