Monument record MDO38643 - Post medieval lime kiln, Childhay Manor Farm, Broadwindsor

A post medieval lime kiln to the southeast of Childhay Manor Farm may be visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s and 1970s. A lime kiln is shown at this location on the OS 1st Edition historic mapping. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

A post medieval lime kiln to the southeast of Childhay Manor Farm may be visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s (1) and 1970s (2). A lime kiln is shown at this location on the OS 1st Edition historic mapping. The earthworks on an aerial photograph of 1947 (1) suggest a broadly square structure about 16m by 16m, open to the east. The earthworks on an aerial photograph of 1971 (2) suggest possible additonal rectilinear banks to the west. These turn to the northeast to meet two narrow banked lynchets that may be the remains of a former field boundary shown on the OS 1st Edition historic map (3). The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (4). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
