Building record MDO3861 - Royal Hotel, Newbury, Gillingham

The hotel had a rendered south front and was divided into three bays by pilasters; the central bay was gabled. There was a porch (probably a later addition) with cast iron columns over the central doorway. (RCHME 1972)

Royal Hotel built ca. 1840. (Newman and Pevsner 1972)

The hotel building has been demolished (in about 2004) and the site redeveloped.

‘Unless otherwise described, the following monuments are of the 18th century and are two-storeyed, or single-storeyed with dormer-windowed attics, and have coursed rubble walls and tiled or slated roofs. … (25) The Royal Hotel (81112640) is of the first half of the 19th century. The S. front is rendered and divided into three bays by shallow pilasters; the centre bay is gabled. The doorway in the centre bay has a porch with cast-iron columns, probably a later addition.’
