Full Description

Historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the southwest of Lowdown Farm are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). The regular straight boundaries suggest a possible post medieval origin but a curving banked field boundary to the east of the group may be of earlier date. The wider field pattern at Lowdown Farm suggests a broadly medieval pattern of enclosure with some later post medieval enclosure so a phasing of land organisation may be visible here. Narrow cultivation marks (MDO38580), possibly post medieval ridge and furrow, are visible to the east of the northernmost field boundary, possibly extending beyond this to the west. A trackway shown on the 1st Edition historic mapping follows the eastern curving lynchet. The field boundaries are still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
