Full Description

Ringwood Union Workhouse was built in 1725. It operated as a parish workhouse until 1835 and may have been known as 'The Ringwood House of Industry'. In 1776 it had a capacity of 160 inmates. The buildings comprised a row of cottages, built of red brick with tile or slate roofs. There was an additional outbuilding, of unknown use, behind. It is perhaps unusual that the Ringwood Poor Law Union (formed in 1835) retained the buildings since they were small and unconventional compared to the workhouses of the time. The workhouse was later renamed Ashley House but finally closed in December 1936. Some of the cottages have now been demolished but a large section to the north-west survives and is Grade II Listed. It bears the inscription 'This House Erected by the Parish of Ringwood 1725'. <1-3>
