Summary

Traces of fields of later prehistoric and/or Roman date on Minchington Down and Woodcutts Common. Largely levelled by more recent ploughing, some field banks and lynchets were recorded as earthworks by RCHME and the Ordnance Survey in the 1950s.

Full Description

(Centred ST 960164) Field system. <1>

Irregular field banks and lynchets, probably Iron Age/Romano-British, partly under grass and partly ploughed. <2>

'Celtic' fields, now almost destroyed by ploughing, extend from the Farnham parish boundary, where they adjoin an enclosure (ST 91 NE 26) [Note: ie MDO6067], as far as Manor Farm (ST 974167). <3>

Group (83): Minchington Down and Woodcutts Common (Sixpenny Handley). 'Celtic' fields, now almost destroyed by ploughing, can be seen on air photographs of the land around the hamlet of Woodcutts. They extend from the parish boundary on the W., where they adjoin an enclosure (Sixpenny Handley (24)), as far as Manor Farm (961153–956166–974166). To the N., on Woodcutts Common, further fields occur around the Iron Age and Romano-British settlement (Sixpenny Handley (19)).
