Monument record MDO37739 - Watermeadows, Thornford Lane, Yetminster

Linear earthworks recorded in 2014 in advance of housing development, interpreted as a probable catchwork watermeadow system. A post medieval drainage system is visible as ditched earthworks on a 1947 aerial photograph. The majority of surrounding fields in 1947 have some form of drainage ditches and more complex drainage systems.

Topographic survey and trial trenching to evaluate a site proposed for development recorded a series of linear banks arranged in a herringbone pattern. These were interpreted as a catchwork water meadow of medieval or post-medieval date; springs to the north of the site support this interpretation.

A post medieval drainage system is visible as ditched earthworks on a 1947 aerial photograph (RAF 1947). The majority of surrounding fields in 1947 have some form of drainage ditches and more complex drainage systems.
