Full Description

A sinuous linear cropmark (2005) and soilmark (2009) representing almost all of the ditched and embanked boundary between Tarrant Rushton and Shapwick parishes east of the B3082 Wimborne Road. The feature can be traced over a distance of some 780 metres within a single large arable field, from NGR ST94411 03894 at the B3082 to ST94947 04405 at its north-western exposure. Near the southern end of the feature there is a faint trace of a second ditch some 3 metres north west of the main ditch, although this appears to be relatively localised. The presence of a linear band of somewhat lighter-coloured chalkier soil in the 2009 photographs suggests that some remnant bank material may survive; although inconclusive, the 2005 photograph may indicate the bank lay on the south side of the main ditch.

The boundary is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1995 and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Miiddle Stour AI&M Project (1). It cuts through the enclosed settlement described in MDO28121.
