Full Description

A possible burnt mound was found in evaluation trench 3 of the archaeological evaluation of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route. It comprised an extensive spread (3009) of charcoal-rich material containing large quantities of burnt flint and some fired clay. It was about 19 m wide and between 0.1m and 0.2m thick. It sealed a small undated pit (3014).

The location of the possible burnt mound, correlated to geophysical survey anomaly 345, which also extended to the south of the trench. The southern end of this anomaly was evaluated by Trench 2, but failed to identify further burnt deposits.

The record for this monument has been created with support from Wessex Water.
