Listed Building record MDO37251 - Nuttlebury, Wonston, Hazelbury Bryan

One of a row of three adjoining houses, a mixture of dates and materials. The houses range in date from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, some much altered and extended. It is thought that these may have originally been four, or possibly more, houses. This house has walls of coursed rubble with a thatched roof.

‘Unless otherwise described, the following monuments are of the 18th century and are two-storied, or single-storied with dormer-windowed attics; they have rubble walls, brick chimneys, thatched roofs and casement windows. … (12) Cottages (74380808), four, stand in a row facing S.W. Treswell's map shows that cottages were set close together here in 1607, as is the case today, but none can be positively identified. The most southerly is two-storied, of coursed rubble with a slated roof, and is probably of the early 19th century. The next has brick walls on a high ashlar plinth and may go back to Treswell's time although the brick upper part, in English bond, was probably rebuilt early in the 18th century. The thatched roof continues over the next cottage to the N.W. which has similar brick walls and is probably contemporary. The next cottage is also contemporary with and in the same alignment as the foregoing; it has been heightened by the insertion of 19th-century semi-dormer attic windows.’

'Now only front elevation thatched (rear is tiled) following a fire in ?1980s-90s. Shown on 1607 map. In the 1950s the inglenook fireplace was opened up and beside it was a small 'creep-in' room with a chair and a collapsed table on which rested a large, very early Prayer Book (from the times of religious persecution; a "priest's hole" perhaps. The location of the prayer book is not known. Dorset County Museum?'
