‘The Dorset-Devon boundary at Lyme runs with the bounds of the one mansion of land granted to the Sherborne church in 774 (Barker 2005, 199-204). This is defined by the Uplyme boundary of 938 re-surveyed in 1516 (Fox, 1970, 35-47). Initial findings include a large ash stool which may be the Langshereayssh of 1516. Here the county boundary takes the form of a very substantial bank which runs north from the end of Shire Lane down a steep slope, over the A3070 at what was the Black Dog Inn and on down the to the Salteforde of 938 on the River Lim.’
