Summary

A bowl barrow. In 1970 this monument was recorded as around 51 feet in diameter with a mound 5 feet high. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery.

Full Description

A tree-covered bowl barrow, 51ft diameter and 5ft high situated south of Tinker's Barrow. <1,3>

Bowl-barrow, grass-covered; trees now removed. Condition good. Diameter 16.5m, height 1.2m. Slight vestige of an outer ditch in SW quadrant. Published Survey (1:2500) revised on MSD. <4>

The Bronze Age barrow described in <3> is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery. The barrow is sub-circular and surrounded by a narrow ditch. The barrow is sub-oval in shape and measures 21 m by 17 m. <5> This site was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

‘There are twelve barrows. Two, unidentified, ‘one on the downs and one on the heath’, were opened in the 1890s. Both contained at least one inurned cremation, and from one came two urns, now in D.C.M. (Dorset Procs. XVII (1896), xxv-xxvi; XXIX (1908), 136-7; XXX (1909), xlviii.) … (30) Bowl (SY 78 NE; 77878759). Diam. 51 ft., ht. 5 ft. Tree-covered.’
