Full Description

Bowl Barrow, destroyed by gravel digging before 1954. (8-9)

The site of Bronze Age barrow described above in (8-9) is visible as a cropmark ring ditch on aerial photographs of 1947. The ring ditch measures 35 m in diameter. (4) This site was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

('A' SY 75878828, 'B' SY 75898821, 'C' SY 76038805) Tumulus (NR) (Three Times). (1)

Three barrows destroyed by gravel quarrying before 1954. (2)

'C' - This barrow was destroyed by gravel digging in 1935-6, but was excavated by some persons prior to its destruction. Some urns were found, which I believe were sent to Dorchester Museum. Barrows 'B' &'A' were probably destroyed during the recent war, when an airfield was constructed at Woodsford Heath. (5)

Fragment of a Late Bronze Age cinerary urn and burnt bones from a barrow at Warmwell Pit presented to the Dorset County Museum - acc No1936.89.1 - by Major Foster, Warmwell (6.1).

'A' This barrow has been destroyed, its site being occupied by a pillbox of the airfield defences. (The airfield is now disused, and under the plough).

'B' Destroyed; this barrow has been gravelled away. In view of authority 3a, it seems probable that the Late Bronze Age urn fragmentin the Dorset County Museum came from this barrow, but Mr Hodder
thought that more than one urn was found when the excavation took place. Major Foster of Warmwell is now deceased. (6)

'A' - SY 75878829 - Warmwell 2.
'B' - SY 75898821 - Warmwell 3.
