Medieval deer-park at Wynford Eagle, most of the area now occupied by Wynford Wood. The park pale associated with the park is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery.

Full Description

(Centred SY 571964) Medieval deer-park at Wynford Eagle enclosing about 115 acres, most of the area occupied by Wynford Wood. There is scanty documentary evidence but the earliest known reference to the park is in 1279 and the last in 1586. The park pale is mainly well preserved and there was apparently a ditch on the inside although in most places there are only faint traces of this now. (For further details see annotated map). <1-2>

Track widening by the Forestry Commission enabled a section across thebank and ditch of the park pale to be examined. <5>
