Monument record MDO3459 - Bowl barrow, Wynford Eagle

Please read our .

Summary

A bowl barrow on a north facing slope, 140 metres south east of Broadwater Cottage. The barrow has a mound, 20 metres long by 15 metres wide, perhaps reduced in width as a result of truncation by a previous trackway on its eastern side. Surrounding the mound is a quarry ditch which has become infilled over the years but survives as a buried feature 3 metres wide.

Full Description

Listed under long barrows and described as `doubtful; oval form possibly due to soil-creep on hill slope. Side-ditches not visible. `visited in 1939 & 1953`. Orientation NE-SW. Length 85 ft; width 60ft; height 3 1/2ft. <2>

Possibly the remains of a small long barrow. the E side has been cut into by a later track. Measurements 73ft x 45ft x 3 1/2ft . <2-4>

This mound is situated at the edge of a N.W. facing slope. This position combined with mutilation on the S.E. side of the mound where it is cut by a track, makes the extent of the mound difficult to determine. Approximate dimensions: lengths (NE-SW) 20.0m width 15.0m height 1.6m. There are no side ditches, and the mound is grass covered. The ratio of length to width does not seem great enough to justify the mound as a long-barrow, even of Wessex type, when the track is taken into consideration, for this appears to have worn away some of the S.E. side.
Possibly a long-barrow, but from appearance a mutilated bowl barrow. <5>

As T.3 from surface appearance of a mutilated bowl barrow, insufficient details to warrant other classification. <6>
