Summary

A hoard of 22 silver coins was discovered by workmen in 1818 under a heap of stones in a field called 'Shell-acres' belonging to Higher Wyld. Ten of these coins are in the possession of a gentleman at Axminster. They consist of 5 of Antoninus Pius and one each of Domitian, Vespasian, Trajan, Lucilla and Marcia Otacilia Severa. Possibly a mid-3rd century hoard.

Full Description

A hoard of 22 silver coins was discovered by workmen in 1818 under a heap of stones in a field called "Shell-acres" belonging to Higher Wyld (SY 34159642). Ten of these coins are in the possession of a gentleman at Axminster. They consist of 5 of Antoninus Pius and one each of Domitian, Vespasian, Trajan, Lucilla and Marcia Otacilia Severa. <1>

Shellacres is the name of the field centred at SY 3391-9650. The owner knew nothing of the hoard of coins and a perambulation of the field revealed no surface finds of archaeological interest. <2>
