Monument record MDO3426 - Ring ditch, Winterbourne Steepleton

Please read our .

Summary

A cropmark visible on air photographs may represent the site of a plough-levelled round barrow. The western half of a possible ring ditch, around 21 metres in projected diameter, can be seen. The other half, assuming it exists, falls within another field and no cropmark is visible. In 1981, an Ordnance Survey field investigator noted a slight rise in the field bank at the recorded location, but nothing else to indicate the presence of a barrow.

Full Description

The western half of a ring ditch, approximately 21.0 metres in diameter, is visible at SY 63409056 on an air photograph. The eastern half falls within another field in which no cropmark is discernible. There are no ground indications of a barrow; a slight rise in the field bank at the plotted position is but one of several denoting intermediate stretches of disrepair. Fields under pasture. <1>
