Summary

Site of a probable Bronze Age bowl barrow, recorded as an extant mound by RCHM. One of a cluster of three. Also visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs.

Full Description

A cluster of three barrows lies on a knoll above a steep west slope below and about 500 yds east north east of Black Down. They are clearly visible from north. SY 61738770. Bowl barrow on a slight south east slope 50 yards south east of SY 68 NW 123. Diameter 33 ft, ht 4 1/2ft, slightly damaged. <1-2>

SY 61738771. Ploughed-down bowl barrow, diameter 13.5m, height 1.0m. No visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. <3>

One of a cluster of three probable Bronze Age barrows located on a knoll above a steep west slope below and about 500 yards east-north-east of Black Down. Recorded by the RCHM as an extant earthwork, measuring 33ft. In diam and 4.5ft. High, slightly damaged <2>. Ordnance Survey field investigation in 1980 described it as a bowl barrow, ploughed down <3>.

It is also visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs <6>, shown as a circular plough-levelled mound surrounded by an outer ditch, approximately 13 metres in diameter. It was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
