Full Description

A probable long barrow forms part of the Poor Lot barrow cemetery. The site lies at SY 5930 9097, on steeply sloping ground on the north side of the South Winterbourne valley, commanding views across the Poor Lot barrow cemetery towards Black Down and the Long Bredy bank barrow. The site comprises a rectangular, flat topped mound, oriented NW/SE, 30m long, 15m wide and 1m high. The mound has been deliberately sited between two swallow holes. It is depicted and named as a `tumulus' on the OS 1st edition map and marked on the RCHME's plan of the Poor Lot barrow cemetery but not numbered or described (RCHME 1970 Dorset vol 2). It lies some 150m to the NE of the possible long barrow (SY 59 SE 116) and another very similar site, RCHME Winterbourne Abbas 22, could also be a long barrow, suggesting an early focus for the Poor Lot barrow cemetery. <1>

The site was surveyed using differential GPS at a scale of 1: 1000 as part of a survey of the long barrows on the South Dorset Ridgeway carried out by English Heritage and the Ridgeway Survey Group. <2>

The potential site of a Bronze Age barrow to the north-east of Winterbourne Poor Lot. The site is visible as low earthworks on aerial photographs. It is marked as a Tumulus on the OS 1st and 3rd edition maps. <3>
