Full Description

FIELD SYSTEMS: Taken from Air photos in Jany - March 1949 by:- R J C Atkinson. <1>

Area centred at SY 594906. A field system of IA/RB type, with field banks and lynchets forming rectilinear fields. These are most pronounced in the pasture N. of the DORCHESTER - BRIDPORT ROAD, where the lynchets average 1.2m high, and the field banks average 5.0m wide and 0.2m high. S. of the road the system is poorly defined and much of the area has been under the plough. The relationship of the system to the barrows of the WINTERBORNE POOR LOT group (39SE7) could not be defined but is assumed to be of later date. See AP CPE/UK/243/3146. <2>

The remains of an Iron Age or Romano British field system are visible as low earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs to the north-west of West Hill Farm. <3-5>
