‘Stone shrunken medieval hamlet E of Hillbutts … A scatter of buildings to the east of Hillbutts is shown as ‘Stone’ on Woodward’s map of 1774 (D/BKL). The earliest known reference to the tithing of Stone is 1268. The settlement pattern of this area from the 1774 map is a series of enclosed crofts. Some cottages have been demolished since 1774 but others survive. Most of the Stone cottages have been sold outright or are on long leases. A scatter of debris exists at SU00150075 where two cottages have been demolished since 1774.’
