Type and Period (1)

Full Description

The OS 1st edn 25in map (1870) shows a stream or ditch running W to E to the N of the River Stour. The 2nd edn map (1898) (2) marks the footpath running alongside it as Marsh Ditch. A lease dated 1678 (Dorset History Centre D1279/1/3/10) refers to 'two acres of land lying against the Marsh Ditch' in Christchurch's former common, the Portfield, suggesting that the feature dates back to at least the later 17th century.
