Summary

An electrically-operated cliff railway opened in 1908 by Bournemouth Corporation, the second of three such railways. Control stations were housed in shelters at top (driver) and bottom (assistant). The original wooden cars were replaced by aluminium-bodied cars in the 1960s, with further upgrades in the 1990s.

A cliff lift on West Cliff is shown on the OS 4th edn 1:2500 map (1933) (1), linking the foreshore with West Cliff Promenade.
