Full Description
The OS 1st edn 25in map (1889-90) (1) shows a structure built within West Lake named Swiss Cottage. It did not appear on 1920s mapping (2) and had presumably been removed by that date. The name suggests a feature forming part of the extensive designed landscape on the Island, possibly a cottage ornée, but its name and position within the lake also possibly referred to discoveries during the 19th century of prehistoric dwellings built on piles in Swiss lakes.
