Full Description

A hollow or pit cut into the slope with a probable spoil heap on its downslope side is shown as an earthwork and named Devil's Den on the OS 1st edn 25in (1889-90) (1) and later maps. It is likely to have been a quarry. However, the fact that is not identified as such on the map and has a fanciful name suggests that this may have been at a rather earlier period.
