Summary

An early 20th century tidal swimming pool at Dancing Ledge. It was in existence by 1928, as it appears on Ordnance Survey mapping dating to that year. It is situated at the site of a former 19th century stone quarry. It is thought that the pool was built by masters from a preparatory school at Durnford. It is owned by the National Trust.

Full Description

A tidal swimming pool is situated at Dancing Ledge, Langton Matravers, Dorset. It is situated at the site of a former 19th century stone quarry, SY 997 768. It is thought that the pool was built by masters from a preparatory school at Durnford. It is owned by the National Trust. <5>

The site around SY 997 768 is marked as a quarry on the 1:2500 scale OS map for 1889. The actual pool is indicated as "bathing pool" centred at SY 99809 76871, on the 1928 1:2500 scale map, it is not indicated on the previous 1901 edition. It still is depicted on the modern 2005 OS mapping. <1-2, 4>

A rectangular feature in foreshore rocks adjacent to Dancing Ledge quarry is shown on the OS 3rd edn 25in map (1928) as 'Bathing Pool'. <3>
